Tina’s philosophy on teaching riders:

Tina is primarily self taught. She has also trained under several professionals in dressage and over fences, in clinics and private instruction. Tina has also studied and attended clinics on Centered Riding. Tina feels that while proper equitation should present a pretty picture, that “pretty is, as pretty does”. Tina believes that a functional, secure position is absolutely crucial for every rider, whether a recreational rider or the competitive rider. Lessons are individually structured and planned, not only based on the rider’s goals, but biomechanics- taking into consideration each persons’ physical skills and abilities, plus the individual’s comfort level.

Once Tina has worked through developing the rider’s independent hands, a secure base of support and the ability to functionally “ask your horse how to do the things you need to do”, then she can begin to “tweak” the position and help the rider present a professional appearance. A rider who can “pose” in equitation, yet be ineffective with their horsemanship skills is not going to be a rider “who can go on and enjoy this sport for the rest of their life”.

Tina strives to prepare riders to be able to do their own thinking during their riding. A thinking rider who has a secure base of support and a repertoire of knowledge and abilities will be able to feel successful in their horse riding. Even if the rider can’t solve every problem they run into, Tina’s goal is to have a rider who can work on solving their own problems, set realistic goals and know when they need help with a problem, without getting discouraged or injured.

Tina’s Philosophy on training horses:

Every horse is not suitable for every job. Some horses won’t lope, some won’t jump, some excel on trails, some excel at pleasure shows. However, all horses at Southwind Stables receive the same basic training, and with this training, they will be able to go on to do whatever job suits them in the future. Circles, bending, flexing, an ability to walk, trot/jog and lope/canter are just the beginning. Obedience both on the ground and in the saddle is important no matter the rider’s goals for the animal. Basic training involves lunging skills, work in hand, ground driving, learning to give to the bit and acceptance of the aids. This basic training is necessary in every event with a horse.

After basic training is completed, the owner can then continue with more disciplined training for the job they have in mind. After the basic training, Tina will develop a feel for the horse and will be able to tell the owner if the horse is or isn’t suitable for the job they had in mind. Every horse trained at Southwind Stables gets training with their owner, before they go home. Tina does not approve of sending a horse home with all the “buttons” only to have an owner take the horse home and discover they can’t find the “buttons to push”. Push-button training will only invite confusion on the horse’s part and frustration on the owner’s part. Tina cultivates a respectful horse/owner relationship before the horse goes home, each partner - horse and owner - is a vital part of the team.
