Our Story

Southwind Stables was started “officially” in 1996 with the purchase of 47 acres in southern Seneca County, New York, in the heart of the Finger Lakes and Wine Country Region. We located between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake, north of historic Watkins Glen, NY and south of Geneva, NY.
Southwind was named for the south wind that always blows here. Nice in the summer, but not so nice in the winter! We are always cooler here, always refreshing!
The story begins when Ed and Tina met in 1991 and combined their love of horses and each other. When they met, Ed had draft horses, Tina had saddle horses and together they found a way to enjoy each other’s interests. Ed is an accomplished rider in his own right and has a great eye for selecting horses, as well as being handy enough to keep the physical and mechanical needs of the farm running.
When Ed and Tina first purchased Southwind they showed Percheron horses both at hitch and halter and had a great time, with quite a few successes. However, trying to show up to six Percherons with two or three people was not only draining on the purse, but draining on the man power, so eventually they turned back to full time with saddle horses, concentrating mostly with American Quarter Horses.
Tina had many success including becoming a multiple “Top-Five” winner of The All American Quarter Horse Congress - the world’s largest single-breed horse show.
Currently, day to day operations and training are Tina’s specialties. Growing up on a farm and a lifetime of animal care gave way to husbandry skills that have contributed to her ability to run that aspect of Southwind.
Along with Ed and Tina, daughter Jaimee fills in where needed with animal care, baling hay, riding horses for the farm as well as her own. She is an accomplished rider and teamster and has a bright future with horses.
